All white

I'm looking for a paint that isn't white but is. Or maybe is, but isn't. With a thousand variations on almost but not quite white it shouldn't be difficult but, it is  - unbelievably so!

Farrow and Ball have a murky, beige greyish paint on their colour chart they call
'Elephant's Breath'. I'd love to be on the team that chooses the names for these colours. I imagine it to be completely random!

The first sprinkling of snow has appeared on Ben Dearg. At first glance it looks snow white, but then again it could be great white, off white, house white, vanilla white, Cotton white, shaded white, new white, or perhaps in time even old white.

In which direction would you like your white to tend? Warm? Cool? Dirty? Bright? Luminescent? Chalky? There is a preponderance of newly painted Swedish grey whites out there in Blogland. Are you being subliminally influenced by them? I know I am.

well I've gone for a sort of shell white. It needs to be slightly warm The flooring (when we lay it) is limed oak and pinoleum blinds at the windows in light wood. The house is danish, maybe I should have gone for the slightly distressed grey white look, but I have been just a little worried that the room would appear cold - it's such a big awesome decision. I've just shut my eyes crossed my fingers and am about to leap in at the deep end!

Leap away. I'm sure it will all look lovely. And of course the light at different seasons and times of day will alter it all the time anyway. I'm not the person to ask. I've been known to paint a wall three times. Swatches and test patches just don't come close to the end result. We had many test patches in the hall for over a year and ended up with wallpaper.

I'm a great fan of Dulux Chalky Downs - white with a hint of warm rather than cold grey.

Hello Maddy, thanks for dropping by. I've definitely chosen 'wrong white.' I'm half way round and I don't like it.I've come upstairs to find solace on the computer. I'm hoping that when I go back down it will all have been just a nasty dream!
But I think not and am preparing to wash the brushes and resume the search. Chalky Downs you say, I shall take a look.
