Away

We went to London last week. We had to go to the funeral for the daughter of some very good friends of ours. It was tragic and very sad. The young woman who died was only thirty five just a couple of years older than Jo seen here with her Dad. She died of cancer after a long battle. On the plus side it meant we got to see family and friends. We spent two days with Jo in London.
We went to the Darwin Centre at the Natural History Museum and afterwards a funny little pub tucked away underneath The Arches near the river Thames. You could hear the trains rumbling along nearby and you hit your head on the ceiling every time you stood up....perfect!
We met Jo's new boyfriend. We followed their bobble hats to the restaurant. Jo seems so happy and it's good to see her well again. She loves her job as a midwife but finds night shifts and long long hours exhausting at times
I find London exhausting all of the time. I love it, it's the best city. But wandering around museums and galleries and walking everywhere because we feel it's good for us can be very tiring. I spent a lot of time looking for somewhere to sit down!
We arrived back home late on Saturday night and  couldn't wait to get out and blow away the grime and dust from the city
And what better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than up a hill in the wind and rain and mist and cold! I left the rain water on the lens......it added to the mood somehow! It's good to be home.

Like you we love visiting London, but always come home exhausted.

What a huge contrast. Also love London, and strangely feel it is very familiar although we don't know it well. But the walking is much more tiring than walking on a hill.

Brilliant post! You have captured everything so well. I've never been to London but I can really feel the atmosphere. The monochrome picture of your daughter has really caught something special. And the 'back home' images made me shiver just to look at them, but yes, a certain cleansing freshness was also palpable.

Thank You old black. London is a vibrant city, very colourful, but it was good to come again...even if it was a bit cold and wet!

How sad about your friend's daughter. About 15 years ago we lost a friend to cancer who was a similar age, with two young children. One good thing to come of it is that others in this circle of friends have since made a real commitment not to drift apart.

I can understand your tiredness in the big city. East, West, Home's Best!

That's exactly how we feel about London - interesting, lots to see and do, loved ones to catch up with, but oh, how lovely to get home again to quiet countryside and clean air! And walking isn't half so tiring here than on London pavements...

I think you don't realise how far you walk during a day in London. I might have passed you in Trafalgar Square! I was up there on Monday. Your hill walk looks energising despite the rain.

Just found your blog. I love London, live there, and appreciate the need to find somewhere to sit down. Love coming home (not far from centre) to find a little peace. Love Scotland too, my dad lives on Skye. Will be visiting Scotland regularly now, courtesy of your blog.
