We couldn't get close enough. With hindsight we should have got the canoe out on the loch or driven round to the other side where the majority of dolphins seemed to be. It's difficult to take my word for it as my only photo of the dolphins is a blurry white line! But there were over a hundred of them in the loch last week and they swam past our back garden (albeit on the far side of the loch) and spent the day fishing and playing and staying out of reach of the camera. You can see a better photo here courtesy of The Stornoway Gazette featured on john-humphries blog.
While the dolphins, and this poor sheep, I'd backed into a corner, weren't keen to appear on my blog, one of the black sheep that live up the lane was very willing, and went to a great deal of trouble with her appearance.
It was a perfect day for dolphin spotting - if only they'd been closer! The locals said they couldn't remember having seen a pod of dolphins of that size coming right into the loch before.

Annie, that is so cool and so interesting! And, as usual, your photos (and your life) are lovely.
Unbelievable! We live on the Pacific NW coast and see little porpoises here albeit a couple of them and even a whale or two have wandered near by occasionally!
Many thanks for sharing!
The landscape is absolutely gorgeous.

Either the light, the camera or as I suspect the photographer are getting better. Great shots....buy a boat and follow the dolphin. You also have orca and basking shark to shoot, prawns by the thousand to eat, mussels by the rope to harvest, soon (NOT) pay for a wee boat.
A great place to live.
How truly marvellous! If it happens again, I can imagine you sprinting down to the water and getting that canoe afloat!
You have such a good eye for taking photos I'm surprised you haven't tried selling them, they really are fantastic.
How very beautiful. I've seen porpoises in Aberdeen harbour a few times, but never so many dolphins in one place. I'm really surprised they came so far into even a sea loch!
I was just watching Autumnwatch and thinking, Annie has all this on her doorstep and here you are with hundreds of dolphins. They didn't have dolphins. Do you ever see beavers?
Wow Annie, that must have been amazing to see. You have taken some beautiful pictures here. I love the little sheep modelling the latest in straw fashion!

Just discovered your fantastic blog which is very inspiring. Have friends in Ullapool and come up often so great to see your amazing photographs. Particularly liked the close ups of the colours on the rocks - beautiful.
